How did we meet?
Nathan and I have actually known each other since our early twenties, however didn’t really get together until a few years later. We both worked for the same company out of uni and we’d always chat (even though I remember him being so nervous around me) however at the time I was in a long-term relationship with a guy from high school, who I was certain that I’d marry. When that didn’t pan out and we broke up, Nathan and I spent more time together and started getting a lot closer.

It’s still crazy to think that Nathan has been in my life for so long and I could have easily missed out on something so special. I was so devastated when I broke up with my previous partner as we’d been together since we were 15 years old, but there really is a silver lining to every cloud! I couldn’t imagine my life without Nathan now.

How did he propose?
Being the hopeless romantic that he is, I don’t think Nathan could help himself with going all out on the proposal.

Nathan said that he had a work conference at Melbourne’s Crown Towers (If you know Crown Towers, you’d know that it’s the most glamourous building in the city!) So he recommended that we book a hotel room and go stay over for the night. I remember we were sitting in the hotel room about to get ready for dinner when he got down on one knee and pulled out the ring. As it turns out, there was of course no conference and we woke up the next day to a gorgeous brunch on the waters of Southbank and later just dawdled around the city in pure bliss.

How did you choose your wedding dress?
Every bridal gown I’ve ever seen at a wedding that had made my jaw drop was a Jason Grech design, so I knew that as soon it was my turn, I’d know exactly which designer to turn to! All of his pieces are so elegant and classic, and when I saw my gown – I knew it was the one. I couldn’t believe how well it fit me even before alterations, and because it was silk, it was so comfortable to wear all day. It also had gorgeous embellished detailing down the sides which matched with a stunning Capulet that could be removed. So comfortable and functional!

What sort of style did you envision for your wedding day?
Nathan comes from a traditional Greek family, so it was a given that we incorporate his family’s traditions into the ceremony. However, I still wanted to inject some modernity and a bit more glamour into the event. This is largely why we chose Crown as our venue space (amidst the fact that our proposal took place there.) The views from our reception venue were absolutely stunning and we loved the fact that it overlooked the skyline of the city. When choosing my bridesmaids dresses, my own dress and the ceremony décor – I wanted to go for a timeless glamour feel to contrast against the modernity of our reception décor and to still tie in with the traditional Greek elements of the day.

Where did you go on your honeymoon?
Luckily, we both managed to take quite a bit of time off for our honeymoon and we fit in two trips! We headed to Bali for ten days to relax, came back for a week (possibly the hardest working week I’ve ever done) and then we jetted off to Europe. We met up with Nathan’s family in Greece and met up with a couple of my sisters as well. Afterwards we also travelled through Spain, Italy and Croatia.

Sunday Interview. Red Letter Days

Welcome back to our relaxed and lazy Sunday Interview series. We talk to a professional wedding vendor each Sunday and share with you what they have to say. It’s a great way to learn more about them and get real advice. Grab your coffee or tea and enjoy!

Today we are pleased to interview Micaela of Red Letter Days, owner and photographer. Photography is one of the most important aspects of your wedding day, beside the groom! Here is what Micaela had to say when we asked her some questions.

red letter day photography What do you specialize in? “Weddings & Portraits.”

How long have you been in business? “Since 2011.”

How did you get started in the wedding industry? “I knew right away when starting the business that weddings were going to be the main focus for me.  My passion for people and capturing their love and emotions just naturally pulled me in that direction.  Getting started, the most powerful tools were building good relationships with clients and a lot of networking.  Of course a lot of hard work to build that portfolio was important as well.”

Are there any trends you are seeing with your field for 2016? “When it comes to trends in photography, first looks and open air photo booths seem to be going strong in 2016, as well as first looks with dad.  Hiring a videographer is becoming more popular and something I absolutely love to see. It makes me so happy to see couples investing in professionals to preserve their memories.”

What advice would you give a couple who is just planning their wedding day?

1- Invest in the things that matter the most to you.  Weddings can be overwhelming, and they cost a pretty penny.  Prioritize your budget and hire professionals to help you see it through.
2- Hire a coordinator. You may be the best wedding planner on the planet, but on your wedding day, you need someone to steer the ship.  That someone can’t be you, it shouldn’t be your mom, or even your friend. You want your loved ones to be able to enjoy the day with you.  Having someone directing the day will allow for every aspect to flow better and allow your vendors to better do their jobs. Stress free is always the best way to go!
3- Enjoy your day.  Don’t put so much pressure on yourself that you forget to let the moments sink in. Remember, you’re celebrating one of the happiest stages of your life.  Cheers!

Thanks again for taking the time to share with us and our readers. Head over to her website, Red Letter Days to find out more about her and see more work!

Wedding Fashion 2013: Bridesmaid Dresses

Martha Stewart Weddings went on a Pinterest rampage recently, and I found myself pouring through a bunch pf photos of adorable and stylish bridesmaid dresses. It was a new 2013 collection from Alfred Sung. Without further ado, here’s the latest in bridesmaid dresses!

Alfred  Sung Bridesmaid Dresses Fall 2013 Collection

I love this simple fitted bodice with A line skirt for a bridesmaid dress. The color is rich and fabulous. Pay special attention to the shoe choices for today. I love the colored shoes they paired with these dresses. And really, what is not to love about pockets in a bridesmaids  dress? I used to think pockets in your wedding dress were as good as it could get, but not really. If all of your bridesmaids have pockets, that is a lot more storage space for lipstick, or whatever other emergency wedding items you may need.

More pockets, pleats, and a very feminine bridesmaid dress.

This dress is classy and chic! This one would be perfect for a modern wedding. Earrings and great shoes are a must for this stunning dress.

dessy-group-bridal-alfred-sung-bridesmaids-dresses-8_vertHalter top dresses look great on lots of different body types. If you have bridesmaids with full chests, this is a great choice. This dress is sure to be a winner with many brides and bridesmaids.

This dress is even more feminine than the other pink dress. This one has a hint of the 1950s in it if you ask me. The sleeves are adorable.

Which of the bridesmaid dresses was your favorite? Finding a dress that will be flattering to all of your bridesmaids can be a challenge, but I think there are plenty of options above. I think this is a strong collection and I can’t wait to see some of these in real wedding photos!

Real Portland Wedding: Alexis & Eddie

Whew, our wedding day has come and gone. What a fun, whirlwind of a weekend we had. We tied the knot on May 12th, 2012 in downtown Portland on the lovely patio of Hotel Modero. After getting my make up and hair done by the talented and cute Nicole Wagner my girlfriend and I headed to the hotel to get ready. I was SO nervous but managed to eat a nice lunch with her on the patio before getting ready. Kate Kelly arrived and we started getting dressed and she started capturing the day. I was so nervous and excited to see my man, Eddie all dressed up in his suit and for him to see me in my gown. Getting to see each other before the ceremony helped calm both of us down a lot. We then walked out together and joined a very small group of friends and family. Marky of Custom Ceremonies put together a touching and personal ceremony, which of course I started to tear up during!

After the lovely vows were complete we took a few family photos and then headed inside for an amazing dinner by Nel Centro restaurant. We filled one of their intimate rental rooms and enjoyed dinner. A few impromptu toasts, cupcake eating, talking and photo booth pictures filled the rest of the evening. We were so lucky to have an amazing weekend of 80 degree weather! It was just perfect. After everyone left we headed up to our amazing suite at Hotel Modero to spend the evening. It went by in a blink of an eye and before we knew it was morning! If only there were more hours in the day!!! Below are highlights from our wedding day. Enjoy and thank you to the amazing Kate Kelly for capturing the moments. Please see the list of talented wedding vendors listed after the images.

Vista Hills Vineyard Wedding by Kate Kelly Photography

Thanks to Kate Kelly Photography for sending over this lovely wedding from Vista Hills Vineyard. Alex and Janina both looked stunning on their big day and you can see in the photos how much fun they had with their family and friends. Below is advice and info about their day from the couple. Enjoy the images!

How they met: In 2004 at the University of Puget Sound

The engagement:  One Friday evening we had plans to go to happy hour with Alex’s parents.  When Alex came to pick me up, he told me his parents weren’t able to meet us.  Slightly annoyed that I’d left work early, Alex took me to the Rhododendron garden where he had to drop something off for work.  It had begun to rain and I was not dressed appropriately to be walking around a park.  Eventually Alex sat down on a bench, and confused, I asked him what he was doing.  He asked me to sit down, and he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.  Shocked, I of course said yes.  He had also brought champagne and glasses.  On the way home from the park, Alex told me we had an hour to pack an overnight bag.  When we got to my house, Alex had more champagne as well as stargazer lilies.   We quickly packed bags when a towncar arrived to take us to The Nines.  Alex had reserved a beautiful suite overlooking Pioneer Square.  After settling in, we went to dinner at Urban Farmer.  After dinner, feeling slightly tipsy, Alex lead me into a room off the main lobby at The Nines where his two brothers, their wives and about 10 of our friends were waiting to surprise us.  It was an amazing evening, and Alex truly thought of everything.

Favorite thing about him: I love Alex’s smile, his eyes and his kind heart.

Favorite thing about her: Alex loves Janina’s integrity, and her intensity about their relationship.

Wedding Colors: Green and Pink Wedding Flowers: White roses

Favorite Details: Honestly, everything turned out perfectly.  The weather was amazing, the food was wonderful,  and the colors we chose worked out wonderfully with the venue.  I loved our bridesmaids dress and the way the pink and green looked with the navy.  I also really liked our favors, personalized match boxes and sparklers.

What was the highlight of your day: Seeing each other for the first time and being surrounded by and celebrating with the people that mean the most to us in the world.

Honeymoon Location: Kaanapali, Maui.

Advice for other brides:  Everyone says it, but the day goes by incredibly fast.  Take the time to slow down and take it all in.  Try and stay relaxed, the more relaxed you are, the more you’ll enjoy it.

Real Wedding: Woodland Theme in Portland, OR

We love real weddings, especially all the cute and unique ones that take place in our lovely state of Oregon. Here is an intimate one with a woodland feel which is so perfect for Portland!

From the bride & groom:

“Our wedding was designed around simplicity. Despite dating and being engaged for 3 1/2 years, our families had never met each other prior to the wedding because we’re from opposite ends of the country. I, Brian, am originally from Charlottesville, VA and moved here, to Portland, two years ago to live with Jenni, who’s a Portland native. So we wanted to create an event and atmosphere to inspire mingling and connectivity. We loved being with both of our families, together, and watch everyone enjoy themselves. We did our very best not to over-think the little things and focused on the marriage more than the wedding.”

Intimate Wedding Ceremony at Lavender Tea House, Sherwood, OR

Small weddings are so much fun. They give everyone plenty of time to talk with one another during the event and are less stressful overall. The Lavender Tea House provided a lot of the things needed for an event, such as the venue, food, cake and favors. This took the stress out of their day. Paula and Scott decided to have their wedding in the community they live in, Sherwood, so they could support the local vendors. Here is what they said about their day;

“What I liked most about our wedding day was having our wedding and reception at the Lavender Tea House, in Sherwood, OR. The location was very beautiful and provided a level of intimacy that everyone enjoyed. The presentation of the High Tea Service was very elegant.  The food was delicious and the staff was outstanding!”
